Title: Car Accidents & The Enduring Human Spirit

Blog Entry: After reading about laura's accident, and then seeing the photos, i am reminded of some of mine. I have never been the driver in any of them, always the passenger. So, I can definitely relate to the horror that Laura has been facing,to a degree. The last one I was in, was in 1985,and it was on a stretch of highway that is known as slaughter alley, and I was lucky to walk away from it,myself. I had been dating a guy, that for quite a while, was so sweet, and also a great friend, then, for some reason, it went sour, and we decided it was time to end it. Well, a couple of months later, he called and was saying how much he missed me,and could we get together, and just have fun and enjoy each others' company. But, this was to be at Murietta Hot Springs, and a beautiful place. But, he kept saying I should just come as I am,and not bring a bathing suit. Lol. yah, right. Well, he showed up,and we left. When we got there, we sat down in the spring hot tub,and he proceeded to pull out one case of champagne after another. He knew me well enough to know that I hate most champagnes, and would have no part of it. That didn't stop him,and he ended up trying to force me to do something I was not up for,and we ended up leaving, and, in his brand new(at the time) Fiero, we left, going at top speeds. Now mind you, the reason this highway is called what it is called,is for the 35m.p . h. speed limit, and the extremely tight curves. We were going in speeds topping,at times, 100,which is very dangerous there, and most people,do not try this. But, he was angry, and did it to scare me and show me that he was angry. We ended up going around a curve, and the right tire hit dirt, and the left, hit a pothole, and we spun out of control, and during this, we slammed into a dirt cliff wall, and spun around again. I woke up, leaning on him,and couldn't move. My head hurt so badly, it hurt to think. He immediately jumped out of the car to check out the damage, completely oblivious to me or my pain. That car only had the tires caved in,and the skins of the drivers' door, and my door, had only a couple of scratches and a lot of dirt from the dirt cliff we slammed into. Well, after standing around waiting for someone to show up, a little station wagon, packed with a large family, finally stopped and gave us a lift to the nearest ranger station, where I attempted to call my parents and any other family member I could find. My parents, usually ready to help at the drop of a dime, just couldn't make it there,so his brother,my sweet uncle, did. The ranger called for a tow, and the local c.h.p.and we headed back to the crash site. The officer that showed up, didn't realize at first just how much pain I was in,and that any movement at all, was becoming increasingly difficult, and just kept walking the entire length of the skid marks, and back. Finally, he realized I wasn't faking it,and apologized. I was so angry with my so-called friend for causing this, that I spilled the beans and told the officer about the champagne, and where he could find it. I just didn't know how much was really in that little trunk, and was very shocked to find so much. Well, my uncle showed up,and the tow truck driver gave us a lift to the nearest gas station, which turned out to be only about 4 miles from where we were, and my uncle took first my friend home, and then me, and stayed with me and my folks for a while, before finally going home to get some more sleep. We were there with the officers for about 3 hours, before they realized I was in some real pain, and finally let me go. They did want to charge my friend, but realized that what I had in store for him,was a better punishment. My friend insisted I use his insurance to pay for all expenses that he knew that I would incur, and after a year, I got a rather substantial settlement, and was feeling much better. I still have stiffness in my neck, and from the bruising of my right collar bone and bruised ribs, concussion, and strained neck and back, and whiplash, I will always need therapy of some kind, and have to keep changing my position several times a day, to keep from sticking in that position. I haven't heard from that friend since a couple of weeks after the accident, and I did run into a friend who verbally attacked me for what I did to my friend, until I set her straight and the record. She no longer was feeling so defensive for my friend, and realized he was just being a stupid guy,and not,as usual, thinking with the brain God gave him,and could have avoided a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering. So Laura, she will do fine,by the Grace of God,and her ever enduring spirit. You can see,by the words you write, that she is a strong lady, and has a strong will to live. God will be there for her during her surgery, and just remember the important thingis, that you have her,and she has you. I hope she is feeling much better, and to help put a giggle in both of you,I am uploading a video that is called,"Cheating Death;some people are just not ready to go". It is hilarious, and what this man does to 'death", is so funny,it will give you food for thought next time death comes knocking. Just kick his little behind. Enjoy, and peace be with you both, and the rest of our community.
