HR 1279 Gets Boost at House Hearing
Congress has returned to Washington, D.C. for the second half of the 110th Congress, and the time is right to make a renewed push to get your U.S. Representative to support the Direct Support Professional Fairness and Security Act (ANCOR's National Advocacy Campaign HR 1279 Talking Points and Question and Answer). We have a total of 113 Representatives (84 Democrats and 29 Republicans)-including bill sponsors Representative Lois Capps (D-CA) and Lee Terry (R-NE)-now supporting HR 1279. This is a tremendous accomplishment, but if we are to get serious consideration, we need even more co-sponsors.
More Good News on the Workforce Issue!
On the first day that the House of Representatives returned to Capitol Hill, the Subcommittee on Health of the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing examining Medicaid's Critical Role for Americans with Disabilities. Representative Capps discussed her bill, gaining visibility of HR 1279 with the Committee of jurisdiction on this bill. H.R. 1279. Several witnesses, including Ralph Gronefeld, CEO of ResCare, provided written and oral testimony on the workforce crisis and HR 1279. This heightened awareness was demonstrated in the Committee's press release following the hearing: "With the introduction of the CLASS Act, the Community Choice Act and the Direct Support Professionals Fairness & Security Act, we are offering a new approach that builds upon our existing safety net system.."
