Klutzes and Cell phones
by dawnala

A while back I blogged about a scary event that happened to my daughter's friend and how she was lobbying for a cell phone.

Also Richard teases me a lot because I'm a klutz.

No, these two things are not unrelated.

On Sunday, Richard was out in the back yard.  He had his cell phone in his shirt pocket when he bent over the pool.  Plop went the cell phone into the pool.

Now the only "thing" that Richard loves more than his pool is his cell phone.  Ever since he got one, thinking that he would hardly ever need it, it has been firmly attached to his ear.  If he isn't yakking it up with family or friends, he's taking business calls on it.  Anyway, the point is that the phone falling into the pool was a major tragedy for him.

He snatched it out right away and took it apart so that it could dry out.  After a few hours he put it back together, turned it back on and prayed.  Well it did turn on but he kept getting this message, "invalid battery."  Not looking good.  The next day it was still doing the same thing.  So after two days of no cell phone he decided it was time to get a new phone.

On Tuesday after work he went to the Sprint store to replace the phone.  Ran into some typical cell phone provider red tape.  He could get an $80 rebate on the replacement phone if our contract was extended for another 2 years.  No problem - we had just extended it, so what's another 3 months added on?

Well...  Yes, problem.  You see I am the one who opened the dang account with Sprint.  So I have to be the person to extend the contract.  Grumble, grumble all the way home and wait for me to get there.

So instead of me doing the grocery shopping, which fortunately wasn't urgent, we went and got some dinner and headed back over to the Sprint store with all 3 kids in tow.  Looong line....  Yesterday was the first day that the new "hands free" law was in effect and everybody who hadn't already done so was in line waiting to get one.  Naturally there had been almost no line at all when Richard was there earlier.

What do two 7 year olds do in a store when their parents are standing in a long line?  Of course, they run around and tease each other and generally burn off steam, stressing their parents and potentially annoying the other customers.

Well after about half an hour of this we finally got our turn.  This is where Dearra comes into the picture.  As we were leaving the house I sort of casually mentioned to her that since we were going there anyway and since we were going to have to extend our contract anyway, maybe there would be a possibility to talk her Dad into getting her a phone sooner than her 12th birthday.

Not only did the Sprint store have several phones with rebates that brought the price down to $20, but they had a camera phone and it was a red one!  So this story ends with Richard's tragedy turning into a happy moment in which Dearra got her cell phone 6 months early.  And I'm happy too!  It will be a long, long time before Richard dares call me a klutz again!!!

Well maybe not but I can fantasize!
