Self-promotion. Why is it so difficult? I was raised not to toot my own horn... it was looked upon as boasting, and after all, "you shouldn't boast... it's rude." So, what is a writer/artist to do? Let me tell you, waiting around to be discovered is a waste of time, and it is boring. So, since I could really use the money, I decided it was time to get over this stumbling block of mine.
What to do? Hmmmm. That's a hard one. Well, the first step is to get over thinking that no one is interested in what I have to say. After all, I'm interesting! I'm a mother of eight children. That in itself is unusual! I have an affinity for pregnancy and birth (obviously), that I like to put into my writing and artwork. If I can bring more moms into believing in themselves and in their instincts, that's worthwhile!
I also have interesting hobbies. I raise rabbits. I garden... I'm especially fond of herbs and bamboo. I sculpt with wool by needle-felting (the kids LOVE their woolen Golden Snitch!), I crochet, and I can sort of knit. I love learning new things on Food Network. All things Asian interest me... I think I must have been there in a past life. I'm also a devoted Angliophile... I love BBC America.
So, in keeping with starting my binge on shameless self-promotion, I'm starting this blog. I'm working on a website that actually has my name as the domain name... that was a difficult step in itself! I've uploaded my artwork at Zazzle and ImageKind... I'll probably look into more places like those to promote my work. I've joined writing communities and started writing articles. I even have a story idea that I've been shifting around in my brain for the last 25+ years. Maybe it is time it sees the light of day.
If anyone reads this, and has ideas to share on promoting your own work, I'm anxious to hear them! We must all stand up for ourselves, and believe in our own talents and abilities.
