I hope to reduce the distance between me and my best friend, but it is complicated by many silly people making life difficult (and downright impossible at times).

I hope you and your boyfriend are able to stick together through the distance! (There are worse things than a few miles, trust me!!--good intentions of misguided relatives can be one of them!)
