Back-to-School time is an ideal time to create your child identity kit.
More than 350,000 family abductions occur in the U.S. each year - that is nearly 1,000 per day! – No Exaggeration. There are approximately 3,200 to 4,600 non-family abductions each year. Follow these simple tips and create your own.
1) Take a Head Photo - This should be a clear photo (please no cell phone photos - they are not clear). Make this an 'every day' kind of photo with a good impression of what your child looks like at any given time.
2) Take a Body Photo - This should be a photo of their entire body as they stand. Place them by something like a tree or swing set to show their height.
3) Take Special Markings Photos - If your child has any special marks (birthmarks, scars, ect.) take a clear photo of these areas.
4) Type a Stats Sheet - List their full name, parents names, birthday, age, height, weight, hair color, eye color, race, shoe and clothing size, length of hair, allergies, and describe any special marks and habits your child has.
5) Take a Video – If you can, take a video of your child talking and playing in a well-lit area. Let the video show their personality.
6) Finger Prints and DNA – It is very important for police and other workers to have clear finger prints and even a DNA sample. Ask your local police station to fingerprint your child and what you can do to preserve a DNA sample. Fingerprinting is inexpensive.
Keep all of these in a fireproof box at home, a safety deposit box, or other secure area. You may want to keep these in at least two locations.

It's back to school time! Many students have let their academic skills slip during the summer months. This can make the transition back to school a tedious one and put extra pressure on the students, parents, and teachers.
A little end of summer reading can refocus your student and get them ready for the classroom. Even a half of an hour every evening will enhance their abilities. Here are a few tips to help students through these reading sessions and build their confidence: Sentence Reading – Parents reads the sentence first then asks the student to read the same line. The student should point to the each word as they read. As Needed – Provide words and sounds as needed. Be sure to use sufficient Wait Time, but do not let the student become frustrated. Share Reading – Take turns reading lines, paragraphs and pages. Predict difficult passages and read them to the student. Sound Reading – If the book contains uncommon sounds, read these to the child. Informational Books – Students will be introduced to factual books and expected to comprehend them. Parents may have to read these to the child or use one of many strategies. Teach them how to pick out the important details. Frustration – Learn to recognize the onset of frustration, both on the student’s part and your own. Improvise/Change – Be quick to pinpoint a strategy that is not working and move into another way of teaching the goal.

Usually I don't write about my personal life, but I am getting fed up with trying to find a job and need to blow off some steam.
So a year ago I graduated with my AAS in Paraeducation. What is Paraeducation? It's basically a degree in assistant teaching. No Child Left Behind requires that schools have certified teaching assistance in the classroom. Some schools are still depending on those Paraeducators / Paraprofessionals who have passed a weekend course and a certification test, but by law they have to start transitioning to those with a college degree.
Anyway, I graduated with honors, was the President of my college's Education Society, and was teaching as a lead teacher in an after school program. I did everything I could to boost my resume and just about wore myself out doing it. But now, a year later, I am jobless and getting tired of being that way.
What we would really like to do, my husband and I, is move to the Dallas, TX area. At the moment we are in a very small farming community with no prospects (so small in fact, that they JUST put in high speed internet access). I started applying to schools and other educational companies many months ago and am up to 17 since I started counting.
Dallas, and the areas around it, are constantly reporting that they are having a teacher shortage and, though I am not a full certified teacher, I would think that they would be happy to hire someone who is fully dedicated and eagerly looking for work. All we need is one little job, even a part time one, to get us started.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. But if you are having trouble finding a job just remember that you are not alone!

For most students the words, "You are going to write a report..." are the most terrifying words that can be spoken. But, the good news is, they don't have to be! There are many things you can do to make this writing project a healthy learning experience.
To start with, unless you have been given a specific format, the 5 paragraph essay is one of the best formats to follow. All you need is 1 opening paragraph, 3 topics, and 1 closing paragraph.
Lets look at each one:
Paragraph 1 - Introduction - This is where you introduce your topic. Don't not write, "This report is about the ways parents can help children with their homework." This shows a lack of creativity. Instead write, "Parents can help their children with their homework in many different ways."
Try to add a few other sentences to fill out the paragraph. These may be about the importance of your topic, other uses for it, or some statistics.
Then, introduce the three main topic you have chose. Write it like, "Some possibilities include creating Homework Time, sitting with the student at the table, and requesting weekly notes from the teacher."
Paragraph 2 - This is the first topic you listed. Make a transition that sounds something like this, "Homework Time is a simple solution to encouraging good study habits." Now, find 2 or 3 things to support this. You want your paragraph to be at least 5 sentences long.
Paragraph 3 - This uses the second topic you have chosen. Use a transitional like, "Another good practice...," or "Parents can also..." Then write a few sentences about this topic. For Example, "Parents can also sit at the table with their children as they work on their lessons. This encourages the student to focus on their work and lets them know that help is available. Children may also try to impress the parent by working harder...."
Paragraph 4 - Yep! This is just like the last two. This time write about the third topic you have chosen.
Paragraph 5 - This is your conclusion. You can easily write this by asking yourself, "Why is this information important?" You may want to add a famous quote about the topic. It will sound something like this, "Every child can benefit from their parent's assistance with homework. By becoming a partner in the learning process, parent help their children to understand the importance of education. As smith Jones said, "Learning is a social activity requiring real life interactions."
Easy huh? Give it a try! Once you get a feel for how this type of essay is put together you won't have to dread the word "essay" anymore. Â Â Â

The development of prosocial behavior depends on several factors and leads to advancement both socially and personally. This form of conduct can be broken down into sharing, helping, and cooperating. By demonstrating Prosocial behavior in early childhood the individual will have increased chances of future success within their culture.
The definition of prosocial behavior can be simplified into the following statement taken from Guidance of Young Children by Marian Marion, 7th edition, "Prosocial behavior: behavior that benefits another person or animal." This is related to altruism, the ability to assist others without thought of personal gain. Though there are many types of behaviors that are socially accepted and seen as excellent moral values, the idea of Prosocial actions focuses on living beings that can feel both physical and emotional pain and pleasure.

Mr. Jay Bennish, a World Geography teacher at Overland High School in Colorado, was placed on paid suspension March 1, 2006. A student recorded him comparing President Bush and the State of the Union address to Adolf Hitler. This recording was played on a Denver radio station and sparked an uprising in the Cherry Creek School District.
Apparently, the student recorded a twenty minuet lecture on the topic of America, President Bush, the State of the Union speech, and possible "eerie similarities in the tone" that both these political figures used. Mr. Bannish asked his students, "Who is probably the single most violent nation on planet Earth?" Then he answers "The United States of America" (Pearson). On NBC's Today Show, broadcast March 6, 2006, the student who recorded this part of the class said that, "He is asking rhetorical questions that he himself is answering." The student went on to say that Mr. Bannish did not give the students time to answer. A representative of the school district addressed the issue by saying that Mr. Bannish was presenting a bias view. Officially he was charged with violating a district policy that requires teachers to offer different views of an issue.
In Mr. Bannish's defense his lawyer David Lane told the Today Show that part of the job of teaching is to provoke students into thinking about issues and getting them to take a stand. Mr. Bannish clarified this statement by saying his job is to, "challenge students to think critically about issues that are effecting our world and society.cognitive dissonance is one way to activate their minds." Mr. Bannish did say, toward the end of the lecture, that it was not his intention for the students to agree with his statements.

With the various needs of students taking a stronger position in school focus, it is plausible to imaging the schools of the future becoming fragmented. Already schools use resource rooms, pull-outs, separate classes, and various other programs to attempt to cater to students' special needs. Though this is a better approach than measures taken in the past, such as segregation, it segments the day into very small sections of time. This division of time has not been proven to be beneficial to the students since it has not been in use for an extended period of time. It is reasonable to assume that in an attempt to diagnose and address each individual child's learning disabilities schools may take away the continuity the child depends on. Educators and parents understand that stability and consistency are key elements to a child's security. They are also essential elements of education. When a student, especially in a primary or elementary school, sees three, four, five, or more different instructors and health professional a day their sense of stability is interrupted and the entire process collapses. This, added to the increase of divorce, latch-key kids, and non-traditional families may leave a student feeling lost, unwilling, unsupported, and scared.
