Zubby.com - Filling The Social Network Niche
Posted On 11/27/2007 22:09:44

In 2003, a new company came onto the online market with an idea to bring people together. Thanks to the backing that company had from its parent company, it now has over 200 million members worldwide. The site is, of course, MySpace.

Borne from an idea by a publicly traded internet company called eUniverse (which was subsequently changed to Intermix), MySpace is now officially the 6th most popular website in the English-language world. Although figures are never officially released, the recent deal by News Corporation sees MySpace as a true multi-billion dollar industry, and has made these early founders of the company multi-millionaires.

Although early days, a new social networking site is showing eerily similar results that MySpace enjoyed. Zubby.com is the brainchild of Randy Zlobec, the author of the Search Engine Marketing book "SEM Gorilla", and has already been featured on Yahoo Business News. On top of this, the North Carolina media have been lining up to talk to Zlobec about the venture.

Offering a friendlier alternative to the spammy nature of MySpace, as well as the advertising-heavy arena that Facebook is becoming, Zubby.com has seen membership levels explode in the last few weeks. With an average 100 sign-ups per day, it may not be at the level of MySpace yet, but that's for now.

When Zubby.com was first introduced, Zlobec made a promise that the first 1000 members of the site would become part of a group that was rewarded for helping the site grow. These 1000 people would share in any profits that advertising revenue and Google ads, etc, would bring into Zubby. At the rate that the site is growing, this special membership club will soon be filled.

With new members already telling friends, family and work colleagues about it, Zubby is on the cusp of something big. Just like MySpace, it's getting a name for itself in the business news sections of influential websites like Yahoo and similar; just like MySpace, it's a place where like-minded people can come and meet new friends and share pictures, music, etc; and just like MySpace it allows users to sell products and business services via classifieds (although it took MySpace 3 years to offer this option).

For anyone who's already onboard, it looks like you joined at the right time, and things can only continue to grow. For anyone still not part of the Zubby family, there's still time to join the Elite 1000 Club. And even once that's been filled, it's still one of the friendliest and fastest-growing sites around today. Get on board now and see what you're missing for yourself!

Combined Blu-ray and HD DVD player
Posted On 11/24/2007 23:30:27

With all the excitement surrounding the current high definition explosion – whether it's via your Xbox 360, Playstation 3, HD-TV or otherwise, there’s been one thing that’s not had as much publicity. Just like the old Betamax versus VHS video wars in the early 80’s, there’s another battle currently under way, and this time the prize could be even greater.

For anyone not in the know, this war is between the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. HD DVD is the natural successor to the current DVD format, and offers excellent quality over the current DVD display. It’s found in many newer DVD players, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has just received a standalone player that you can play HD DVD discs on.

Blu-ray, on the other hand, is Sony’s entry onto the High Definition market. Found as standard on its Playstation 3 console, as well as many new DVD players on the market, it’s arguably the better of the two formats for picture quality (although the difference is minimal). However, it’s also the most expensive, with a Blu-ray DVD player costing around $100-150 more than its HD DVD counterpart.

The problem is that neither format is compatible with each other, so you have to make a choice as to which one to go for. Get it wrong, and you could have a very expensive white elephant on your hands if the other format ends up winning the battle for consumers’ minds (as anyone who chose the Betamax video format in the 80’s will attest to). Which is why LG’s new Super Multi Blu BH100 is such a Godsend, even if it does cost just under $1,000.

Apart from being a bit of a mouthful to say, especially after some Christmas eggnog, the LG Super Multi Blu BH100 is the first combined HD DVD and Blu-ray player, and will support both formats due to LG’s proprietary software. Not only that, but it also supports the highest definition display that high definition currently has to offer, 1080p. It’s an attractive unit as well, nothing like the combined DVD/VCR players on the market, and will fit into anyone’s home theatre set-up.

If there were any drawbacks, it would be that you can’t play audio CD’s on the player (although you could easily get round this by burning music onto a blank DVD and listening to it that way). Audio is also converted into Dolby Digital as opposed to Dolby Digital Plus, so that might put off those that want the little extras that DD+ can bring.

However, these are minor quibbles on what is an absolutely stunning piece of kit, and one that takes away the worry of picking the wring format. Plus, you can now get the best of both worlds, as you can pick the best version of any future release, whether it’s and HD DVD disc or a Blu-ray one. Now all I need to do is persuade the good lady our home needs one…

The Hypocrisy of MySpace
Posted On 11/02/2007 14:33:11

Why is it that MySpace users, whether it's bands, artists or individuals, are not allowed to send mass messages (or Spam, as they call it) to other MySpace users, yet MySpace Records do it for their artists?

Isn't this just a little bit unfair, not to mention hypocritical? So, it's okay for Tom or MySpace to spam us all with messages about Sherwood or any other band now on MySpace Records, but if a normal MySpace user tries it, they can have their account deleted? Where's the fairness in that?

Isn't this just the same as Restriction of Trade? After all, if a company is monopolizing a media or consumer outlet at the expense of other similar companies not being allowed to trade the same way, that's surely unfair business practice.

If you feel the same, write to Tom or MySpace Customer Service, complaining about this situation.

There's also a Facebook group to raise awareness.

The Idiocy of Racism
Posted On 11/02/2007 14:02:58
Racism. One of life's mysteries, and one of the saddest. I mean, why does it matter what colour someone's skin is? I mean, REALLY? Sadly, in the UK, we have one of the least tolerant societies going. And it's not just against "outsiders" from other countries (although that's bad enough), but also against our supposed fellow countrymen. For instance, Scottish people generally hate English people (I should know - I'm Scottish, but one of the reasons I left my homeland was because of the sheer bigotry my English girlfriend of the time received). We seem to have this major chip on our shoulder that England raped our country in years gone by, and for that, we'll never forgive them. But excuse me, my fellow Scots who follow this notion, we were doing a pretty good job of destroying our own country way before England even became involved (the Highland clan wars, the north and south divide, and the switching of the Border people's loyalty depending which country was winning any given war with Scotland spring to mind). And, if it weren’t for the Scottish "nobility" pandering to whoever paid a penny into their greed-filled pockets, then maybe England's inhabitants would not have taken up the option to live on Scottish land in the first place. But it's the overall "British view" against people of a different colour that really saddens me. Why is a black person supposedly inferior to a white person, just because of the colour of their skin? You mean to tell me that wonderful, strong black people such as Martin Luther King, Jesse Jackson and Muhammed Ali are "inferior"? They've influenced whole generations, regardless of colour and creed. And forgive me, but you give me a football fan of say, the England national team. It's the World Cup final, it's 1-1 against Brazil, and Jermain Defoe has the ball and is guaranteed to score the winner. You'd rather have your national team, who you supposedly love, lose than have someone with coloured skin score? Pretty pathetic. And I feel just as sorry for the Asian/Indian community. The abuse they have to suffer, from name-calling such as "paki" and "terrorist", to being accused of "stealing the white man's jobs". What bullsh*t!These so-called "job thieves" do the jobs because the people complaining are too lazy to get off their backsides and work in the first place. The amount of times I've shook my head in disbelief, as a jobless layabout complains that "the pakis are destroying this community", all while his own lawless kids are out terrorising old people, and he himself is contributing to the community simply by keeping his local pub in beer money, because our government has made it too easy for lazy good-for-nothings like him to rake in the money on benefits. All while the "immigrants who are ruining the country" are working hard, and paying their taxes, to keep jobless lowlifes like him in beer and cigarette money.Great Britain? Don't make me laugh. When was the last time you could truly say Britain was ever great...
